i just bought a '90 240 wagon. very excited - even though the radio, lighter, and nothing on the tailgate work. the wearherstripping around the tailgate is loose and there is a bit of rust inside on the lock/latch. the right side rear cargo window might be leaking too.

does anyone know of a place to get the weatherstripping - other than a dealer(they're so expensive - $130 - 170 each)?

does anyone know a wat to fix this without buying new weatherstripping?

i had this problem in my "83 wagon too but don't remember exactly what i did other than disconnecting the tailgate wires. i figure i have to replace the wiring harnes cuz, i would like to have a tailgate with working wiper, lock, and a working radio and lighter that don't blow a fuse every 5 minutes lighter. has anyone done this, and do they remember the steps?

The new tailgate wiring harnesses are under $20 per side, available on Ebay, or other parts suppliers online here. FCP Groton (www.fcpgroton.com) carries them though they do not list them on their web site. Not a real tough job but you will need to unbolt the hinges and support the tailgate somehow while you're doing this.

To support the tailgate pull the car in the garage and tie the tailgate level with a rope to the joists or pull under a tree. you must remove the clips on the hinge shocks.. while you are there check that the ground wires are intact that run thru the bottom of the hinges. It will take two hours to do both sides the first time.

You can reroute the wiring out the back of the headliner into the tailgate and bypass the hinge(which ends up pinching the wires).I have a mid 80's tailgate you can get the weather stripping from for the price of a six pack.
You can move the lighter wire from fuse #1 to another fuse to avoid blowing fuses.

i was able to re-install the existing weatherstripping. hopefully it works.

thanks for the info. i've ordered the wires from IPD and a new radio.
as for the weather stripping , i'll get back to you. i'll check out the one on my '83.
