Windshield gasket leaks 120-130

Short of replacing the gasket, does anyone have a recommendation for sealing the classic leaking windshield on a 122? I know silicon can cause rust, so do I use a polyurethane caulk?

Thanks -Smitty

I would suggest replacing the gasket and seal it using "3M 08509 glazing and bedding compound" if you want to put an end to your leaks.
Cheers,Jim

Windshield gasket leaves! 120-130

I tried that a few years back,
and wasn't very successful- the car still leaked like a sieve.
So I pulled the matting and drilled a small drain hole.
Finally pulled the windshield this winter, and the gasket had COMPLETELY come apart where it goes around the corner. You could see my pitiful little bead of silicone not even coming CLOSE to closing the void.
Now, my car was from Fla and CA, so it had obviously baked in the sun quite a bit...
But the new gasket seemed like the only way to go after seeing that!

Smitty;

Please elaborate on silicon causing rust, because on a clean painted surface, that's what I would have suggested...I have had decent results with it (both sealing and glueing)...alternately, the windshield places have a sealing goop (I don't know formulation) which works well.

FYI, one part, out of the tube silicon, Room Temperature Vulanizers (RTV) release small amounts of acetic acid as they cure (at a surrounding moisture dependent rate), but after that are quite inert.

Cheers

Silicone can be temporary solution short of replcing the gasket.
Or, stop one of those mobile windshield guys and see if they'll sell you a tube of urethane out of the back of their truck. I don't think one can purchase urethane over-the-counter, at least not in Oregon.
Best,
shayne
