Volvo made a running change in the 1986 and replaced the J type overdrive with the P type overdrive in the turbo 700 series with M46. A 1988 740T will have an alloy case M46 with P type overdrive. NA cars did not receive the P type overdrive.

As long as you get a transmission that is the same length as your original, you should be ok. I'm not sure, but different overdrives could be different lengths. However, I don't think that is the case. Just about any tranmission called m46 will work, you may need to swap, with your original tranny, bellhousings (a new seal or seal replacement gunk and loosening about 5-6 bolts required) and output shaft (air wrench required).

Probably the M46 steel case with J-type overdrive although somewhere in there (88-90?) there was a transition to the M46 aluminum case with P-type overdrive.
