'low idle/cut off' 200 1990

O.K. fellow bricksters. I am having problems with my 240 dl. It seems as if when I come to a stop, the car idle so low that it will almost stop. It has actually stopped 2x. I was told that it may be the amm. I am lost here... The car runs find if my foot on the accelarator, but when I take it off the pedal and stop giving it gas it idle low enough to shut off. Has anyone else had this problem?? Help!!

I had a similar condition. I just raised the base idle by turning the one nut that stops the accelerator gear thing (not sure what it's called). It increased the base idle and now the car never cuts out at a light.

I agree with Jon, I'd clean the throttle body first and foremost and then clean out all the breather hoses, replace the flame trap (kit is only $2.50) and clean and lube the idle air control motor.
When servicing the throttle body, make certain the throttle switch clicks as it closes.
Also inspect the big air intake hose for leaks- I just replaced mine (original 1986 210K miles) because it wore through against a cable. Big difference in idle quality.
Good luck- none of this stuff is expensive or difficult. Spend $20 of the money you'll save on a Haynes manual...

Rob, I think I'm pretty clear in the cleaning of the IAC (spray a load of carb cleaner in the thing, let it soak, shake it about and empty it.) but how do you lube the thing? What's the best product to use?

      TIA

My personal favorite for it is Marvel Mystery Oil, which is pretty well guaranteed to be OK in the intake system. Pretty much the same technique, put some in it and shake.
I think you would get fine results with almost any other light oil, however- you could probably safely use 3-in-1 oil, ATF, 10W30, or even sewing machine oil. I think I would avoid the motor oil only for the fact that the rubber hoses don't seem to like it much... even though most of this system is exposed to plenty of it anyway.
What's in that Mystery Oil anyhow? Good schtuff!

Just for grins, I did a google search for MMO. It certainly seems to have it's proponents, although there seems to be a lot of urban myth and legend associated with it. Hey, if the aircraft guys like it, how bad can it be? Thanks, I'll give it a shot in my IAC.

If your car is an LH3.1 system like my '90 240DL, the Throttle Position Sensor (not switch) does not click. You'll know it's the 3.1 if it's not adjustable.

I second the replacement of the air intake hose. Mine was also full of holes at 150k and I just replaced it at 168k!

      Good luck.

Sounds like there is a problem with the idle circuit, not getting enough air. Could be a gummed up throttle body, a thorough cleaning with carb cleaner will fix. Could also be a malfuntioning IAC valve, some can be fixed with carb cleaner as well or maybe just a bad electrical connection.
Hope this helps -JonB 83 245DL
