oil seal Q 200

Fixin to change the oil seals on my engine(on the stand). Reading the bentleys, they STRONGLY recommend using the special volvo tools. Is this necessary or have you done it without?

    Mark -

I have the PVC fittings - cell phone call Wed, after 0900. Other tips, too. I like Steve's card stock trick.

    Regards,

You can do it without. The Volvo tools have a lip that ensures that the seal lips do not roll over or become hung up on installation. The Viton seals tend to do this. I made a curved plastic cardstock shim and used this to gently push the lips into place once I had installed the seal. Working it around between seal and shaft was successful in making the seal lips seat properly.

The volvo tools also allow square installation, but you can do this by using PVC pipe fittings and some care.
