i just bought a 1987 240 wagon and can't get wheel covers off. any ideas?

Removing the center portion of the full wheel cover should release the rest of it.

on my 85 240DL i have the chrome centers. the fronts are tight the rears well kinda loose considering there is no hub just a little lip aaa 1/4 inch or less. is there a part im missing? like a ??? it just looks like there should be more for the rears to hold. hope you all understand my post not sure how to word it thanks !!!
