Harmonic Balancer Squeal 200 1987

After I replaced my timing belt, there was a squeal that I do not think is from any of the belts or pulleys. I assumed it was the harmonic balancer. It has now dissappeared, or at least I can't hear it over the rattle of the catyalic converter.
Question: Will the balancer fail without warning. Also, how do I know if it needs to be replaced?

Are you certain that it is your harmonic balancer that is making that noise? I would first assume that it is the timing belt tensioner. Did you replace it along with your timing belt? When the bearings start to go on the tensioner, it will squeal like a scared pig.

    Have fun.

When is squeals it should also get hot as hell from the pulley halves slipping. I had one that apparently loosened the crank bolt from the heating and cooling so the whole thing was hot and loose. But it was the heat that tipped me off first.

Make an early warning system. Use white paint, office "Wite-Out", or similar. Clean a radial band on the harmonic balancer that crosses the ruber ring. Paint a white line in the clean spot, from the edge in about 2 inches.

Check periodically to see that all three parts of the line are in one line.

    Good Luck,

    Bob
