OK...sorry about all the posts on this subject... it is admittedly getting old. 'Specially considering I ain't getting anything done on teh project....

But, I have sourced a new (used) rear end for my car, and it is from a '67. I won't get this new one for some time though, and want to get all the other bits lined up in advance if possible so as to be ready to just drop it in. One of these said preparations is acquiring a locker for it, but I need to know what type of rear I'm going to have....

So, the information on a plate on the outside states it as a 41:9... that being 41 teeth on teh ring gear, 9 on the pinion...aka a 4.56 rear end. The Salisbury rear that came out of the wagon is a 50:11, or about 4:54. So... I know that the new part out of the '67 is definitely not the Salisbury type. Next question.... which is it? Spicer 27, or Dana 30?

Short of pulling the cover off, and/or pulling the axles out...is there a way to tell if it is the spicer 27, or the dana 30. Is there an axle housing size difference? Could the existance or non-existance of a drain plug be a clue? (I do know that the junk spicer 27 case has no drain, but the presumably dana 30 from my '71 140 does have a drain... but was that a model change, or just a year thing?)

Anybody with a '67 wagon ever had their axles out and remember if they had lots of little splines on the ends, or 10 big square splines? Does your differential have a drain plug? (Please...any and all '67 owners who've been there reply! I need all the clues I can get).

And, one other thing. I'm assuming that all the torque and panhard rods are the same? That is, I can have my new bushings pre pressed into my existing components and just bolt 'er up when I get teh rest of the ducks lined up.... or might there have been minor changes there twixt '66 and '67....? I know from parts cross references that all the bushings are the same, but...are the arms themselves identical

Please let me know...and I promise...no more on the subject 'till the car is running :-)

    Well, apparently the axle housings on this '67 rear end come in at 2.5"...which is good. That should indicate a dana 30. I also got some pics of it, and they look more like my 140 series dana 30 housing than the 27 I've also got from a 122 sedan...

    Now I just need to sort out the splines to make sure there are 27 of 'em. Anyone with a '67 had their axles out and remember the spline pattern? Or have factory microfiches or manual that might help?

    BTW..I would be tearing it all apart, but this rear end is almost 400 miles away right now, so that is not an option yet....

    Hey Matt,

    Let's see. The '67 rear in the garage does not have a drain plug. I haven't had it apart still, but maybe today. I'll email you the spline count, or just a photo or whatever.

    I think it's the same with the wagone, but in the sedans you can tell a 27 from a 30 by the outside diameter of the axle toobs. 2 1/4" for a 27, 2 1/2" for a 30.

      I think the toob diameter is the ticket...not sure if the sedans and wagons would be the same or not. The '66 and earlier wagons are unique to only wagons, and perhaps they started early with the dana 30 for the wagons too, and skipped the 27 all together....

      The drain plug idea is a bust... the dana 30 from my '70 145 has no drain plug, but the dana 30 thats in the wagon now does have one....as does the 164. So, some dana 30s does, and some dana 30s don't have drains. But, all the 140 dana 30 stuff does have the larger axle toob diameter, so I expect that is teh thing to go by... I'll get them measurements.

    I always heard it like "Dana/Spicer". One company?

    My weeny '64 rear axle (I assume Salisbury type 25) has a drain plug but none of the '67 wagons I've played with have. Also, no sedan I know of has a drain plug.

    All the wagon control arms are the same.

    I know where you can procure bushings;O)
