A/C To R134 complete conversion 200 1989

So many different opinions, and even different kits at the dealer...
Now I noticed that there is a guy on ebay selling a "complete" kit which even has the high pressure hose, claiming it for 240s '79-'90. Let's assume there are no major leaks anywhere... I only really need to change the dryer and expansion valve, after flushing and filling compr with ester oil, correct?

If I get the 20$ dryer and 17$ exp valve from fcpgroton, couple that with my oiling and flushing work, and new o-rings, I should be good, right?

Lastly, can I assume that the new dryer will have the fill port (low side) on it? I am confused to see the ebay complete 200$ kit has a thinner black dryer, I thought the black ones were for R12 and the wider alum ones for R134. Does anyone know about that?

Thanks,

I thought that one must replace all the seals and washers with different ones because the new coolant is much smaller that original and will leak out of the original seals. Every conversion kit I have seen has replacement seals also. My understanding is that if you don't replace your seals, you will be empty very soon.

    Have fun.

The dryers are not the same. The big dryer is for 91-92 240. IT might fit the 700 series cars as well.

The difference is that the big dryer is on the low side (700/900 and 240 91-93) and the little dryer is on the high side.

For a canadian conversion (not horribly hot and humid like the US southeastern areas) you probably don't need to bother with the evaporator. The receiver/dryer and the expansion valve would be good. Flush the system and it'll be decent. Most important of all is getting a good vaccum on the system.

      Thanks Chris,

So I should expect to recieve the thinner black dryer for my '89 240. Will it have the fill port on it? My existing original dryer has the pressure switch on top, can I remount my existing switch on the new one?

Lastly, regarding an A/C vacuum pump, I have a Cambell Hausfeld "portable" electric compressor, outputs 100PSI, does not include the tank, I think it is rated at 1.5 CFM. Ebay sells an airvac device that an existing compressor connects to and it pulls the A/C vacuum (I guess reverses pressure to vacuum). Can I use my compressor and buy this to "get the job done"? Don't mind leaving it on all day if needed, but will it pull adequate vacuum? I know the CFM is not great at 1.5 (hopefully not 1.2), but if this works it's great because I already have the compressor.

      Please advise. Thanks in advance.

      Thanks,
      Greg

        Vacuum Pump. 200 1989

        Greg,

I looked up the spec on the Snap-on Pneumatic pump. It operates at 90 to 120 psig. Consumption is 42 scfm. Vacuum flow is 1/3 hp at 28 in.

Hope this helps. Can you rent a motorised vacuum pump?

        Mak

The port on the drier is the high pressure port.do not attach a can of reaon to this port or the can may explode.
The filler port is on the low pressure side ( the larger diameter hose) on the compressor, this is where you fill from.

Chances are your compressor will not be stout enough for that vacuum pump. I have one and run it with w 6hp compressor with 21 gal tank and it is just right to run one .

You may be able to rent an electric vac pump from a local rental yard ( they get about $15-20 US around here)
