center support bearing play 700 1991

Hi folks,
Just a quick one, did a search and found too much irrelevant info in the archives. Symptoms: when starting from idle, or at cruise, specifically between 2500-3500 RPM, there is a really nasty vibration from somewhere underneath the sedan. Checked the exhaust as I just had work done and no luck. I then check the obvious, the ujoints seem to be fine, there is no play at the output bearing but CONSIDERABLE at the center support. I am just curious as to how much "play" there should be in the center support bearing with the driveline, and how easy should it be to move. I am confident this is the problem but before declaring it as such I just wanted to know how much play there should be. As it is, I can with little force move the driveline about and pretty much hit the top/bottom/left/right of the limits of the center bearing device.
Like I said, I am pretty confident with my amateur diagnosis but just looking for some reassurance.
Thanks folks,
steve from MA

Whats the speed? what about tires? is the rubber cracked? is the drive line in phase?

Hey all,
The vibration/noise is pretty much at all speeds. The tires are still my winters, we are still getting snow in MA :). The rubber looks deteriorated, this helped my 'diagnosis'. As for the drive line phase, I really haven't checked that but will pull the instructions and check. Steel said it sounds about right if the bearing has that play. After the brutal winter this car has seen and then the potholes I don't blame it for having a few broken parts.
Thanks,
steve

Steve sounds like it needs to be replaced,, there shoudnt be much play at all, needless to say if you can make it hit the outer ring its really shot.
