Turn signals won't cancel 200

My girlfriend borrowed my 240, a 1993, only to return it with something broken in the turn signal lever. Neither the right nor left signal indicator will cancel after making a turn. The lever is kind of floppy too. Is there a fairly simple inspection that I can make to see what has happened? Is this a repair that I could probably make myself, or does it require a trip to the dealer (expensive)? Thank you for your advice!

Thanks guys for your advice. The top cover came off no sweat, but the bottom I couldn't get off. Found the two screws underneath and got those out, but the bottom cover is somehow fastened to the dash, although looser than before. I didn't want to pry too hard and accidentally break it. What's holding it in? I couldn't see any more bolts. Are there some hidden clips that hold the front part to the dash? Anyway, after I got the top cover off, I found the trouble.....the top bolt holding the lever assembly had worked itself loose and was completely missing. Couldn't find it anywhere. So the switch wasn't even in position to be cancelled on return. So, I took one of the bottom cover bolts and substituted it for the missing bolt holding the lever in place. Now, the bottom bolt holding the lever is also loose, but since I couldn't get the bottom cover off, I couldn't get it tightened up. Once I manage to safely remove the bottom cover, I will tighten the lever as it should be. Will have to get another bolt to replace the one I stole from the bottom cover. How do I get this thing off anyway? Are there invisible screws holding it? Guess I need some x-ray vision.

Turn signal switches are easy to change out. As you noted on your late-model 240 the column covers are held on with Torx screws. On older cars, they're phillips heads. Either way, it's the same deal: 2 screws up top, 2 on the bottom, remove the cover, 2 screws hold the switch into the column and then unplug the wires and put it all back together with a new switch.
Most any junkyard should yield a good switch. They don't break under normal use. The only thing you need to know is whether on not the car has cruise control, so as long as both cars have it or don't have it, the switch will be the same.

My wife's mother did this to one of our Volvos years ago. Is you girlfriend by any chance, really short? She somehow hit the switch with her left knee, maybe getting out of the car... and pushed it forward. The switch is very strong in the BACK direction- you pull on it all the time for the high beams, right? But if you push hard on it AWAY from you, you'll snap the back cover off its rivets, and the switch will be floppy and broken.

I wouldn't expect to play more than $5 for one at a U-pull-it junkyard. You'll only need a couple of tools to get one out.

Jimmy-
She may have broken off the white nylon tab on the lever. Every 240 at the pick and pull has one, unless you have cruise control and even those are not rare. I have a dozen in the garage if you can't get one dirt cheap. It is an easy install.

I wouldn't say "easy". this is an airbag to which we are referring!

Easy, easy, even if it is a 240 with air bag. Not the 700 where the screws holding the ts stalk face the bag, rather the holding screws are at a right angle to the steering column. The air bag is no obtacle here.

Not yet, but that's subject to change if I don't get these signals fixed...

you could take off the column covers and tighten the screws that hold the lever to the column back down.

I see two torx screws on top cover. Do I remove those to take off the top cover? More to it than that? Thanks.

Been a while since I worked on one this new.

2 torx take off the top cover.

2 torx similarly underneath.

Quite likely one near the key slot, and another corresponding on the opposite side.
