Turn signal switches are easy to change out. As you noted on your late-model 240 the column covers are held on with Torx screws. On older cars, they're phillips heads. Either way, it's the same deal: 2 screws up top, 2 on the bottom, remove the cover, 2 screws hold the switch into the column and then unplug the wires and put it all back together with a new switch.
Most any junkyard should yield a good switch. They don't break under normal use. The only thing you need to know is whether on not the car has cruise control, so as long as both cars have it or don't have it, the switch will be the same.
My wife's mother did this to one of our Volvos years ago. Is you girlfriend by any chance, really short? She somehow hit the switch with her left knee, maybe getting out of the car... and pushed it forward. The switch is very strong in the BACK direction- you pull on it all the time for the high beams, right? But if you push hard on it AWAY from you, you'll snap the back cover off its rivets, and the switch will be floppy and broken.
I wouldn't expect to play more than $5 for one at a U-pull-it junkyard. You'll only need a couple of tools to get one out.
