Wheel Hub Spindle Nut Adjustment 700 1991

In the FAQ they refer to the typical hole & castle nut for cotter pin locking of the axle nut. In my 91- 740 turbo wgn there is no hole in the shaft. The axle nut is the style where you punch the outer edge into a depression on the axle (not there either) The nut was retained by lots of RTV. I peeled out the old stuff & reapplyed more. This seems Mickey Mouse, is this normal?

Wheel Hub Spindle Nut Adjustment 700 1991

That is mickey mouse. Get a new replacement nut. I can't imagine why the nut would have been on and off so many times that it would wear out, but it's very dangerous for the wheel to not be positively retained.
Especially a left front wheel- that wheel can unscrew under normal driving. (Years ago a lot of cars had left-hand threads on the left front wheel to avoid this tendency.)
The nut should be just a few bucks at the dealer. There may also be a metal lockwasher with a tab that you're missing. Check with the parts guy for a view of the hub to see if you're missing any hardware.
