Me again Same restart problem but.... 200

At least i got it started this time. I checked the timing(slightly off, reset to 12degrees BDT)Checked Tps, no wonder my idle wouldn't go any lower/reset it t proper position. Now it'll will restart after about 10-15 cranks, with black smoke billowing out for about 45 seconds after it finally starts then runs/drives fine. Before i checked all the thinks above it would not restart just turn over and over. I posted the other day witht hte same deatails and got 2 responses , one saying it may be a fuel pump check valve(where is it?), and the other saying it might be the water in my battery(yea i know, but i checked anyway, its fine).
So anyone want to point me in the direction of the fuel pump check valve?
Also i change out my brand new IAC because it was idleing my car to 4500 rpms! i put my old one bac in and got the same problem(?)
Thanks in advance

When the car doesn't want to restart, disconnect the mass airfow sensor and try to start the engine. Does the engine start now? If it starts now the sensor is bad. Do not disconnect the sensor with the ignition on it will damage the sensor. If the above doesn't work try flooring the gas pedal while you crank the engine, it will turn the injectors off and allow any excess fuel to burn off the plugs. You might have a leaking injector that is causing the black smoke out the exhaust. The engine would start okay when cold because any excess fuel leaking by the injector would have evaporated off while the engine cooled off. If you can pressure check the fuel injection system it will show the leaking injector. If you don't have a pressure gauge, remove the injectors from the manifold leaving them connected to the fuel lines. Pressurize the fuel system and check for any dripping injectors. Fuel pump check valves that are bad generally result in long cranking times, but not black exhaust smoke. My bet is a leaky injector. Let me know what you find. John

When the engine is being cranked and the gas pedal is held to the floor, the ecu(computer) stops the injectors from injecting fuel. This is to allow one to clear a flooded engine, just like with a carbureted engine. This would not work on a car with the mechanical injection system(k-jetronic). John

tried the amm, still the same, but now it dosen't want to restart at all. the injectors are not leaking , as i just tested them the other day . when i do get it running it runs fine untouched for about 5-10 minutes then just quietly stalls, but if i drive it it runs no problem (until i turn it off)

Have you checked the temperature sensor under the 3-4 intake runner to make sure it is solidly connected and that it is supplying the correct resistance to the ecu? I had an '83 240 that one of the terminals in the connector wasn't snapped in tightly in the connector. The engine did what yours is doing and once the terminal was secured in the plastic housing and snapped on the temp sensor, the engine ran great for years. The sad thing about this was that repair receipts were found in the glove box that showed a poor starting engine was a problem for a couple of years. The previous owners spent plent of money on tows and various parts trying to fix the problem. I hope it is just a loose terminal on your car, John.

On my '89 the fp check valve is in the cluster with the main pump and fuel filter, under the car, back seat area... either way, just follow the main pump to the filter and you should find it. It keeps the fuel from draining down (one way checdk valve concept) after engine shutoff. For me, I had REALLY long restarts when hot. this cured the problem 100%.

Greg, did it smoke after the long restarts for you too? And abot how much do the valves cost?

        Dan

I have a 85 245 dl with the same problem. I changed the fuel presure regulator valve (on the engine, in line with the fuel line to the injector rail)$75 no help. I have researched the check valve question and I belive this is a solution to no fuel to the engine. A faulty valve will allow the fuel to drain back into the tank and require extra cranking to resupply. The problem we have is excess fuel. I suspect something electrical that allows the injectors to remain open and extra fuel to drain into the cylinders. The wiring harness on my brick is in poor shape. I have not pulled the injectors yet, thats next. Not much help but you are not alone!!!
