85 240DL auto..Has anyone had experience with the trans. governor? Still no OD 200

Hello Brickers.

I still (going in 1 year) do not have 4th gear OD in my 85 245DL AW70. I know that the solenoid is working...(I replaced the solenoid and repaired the wiring and can hear the solenoid cycle on/off at the trans.) the trans will shift into 4th when traveling over 45mph and I take my foot off of the accelerator....(decel) but when tip into the throttle it goes back to and stays in 3rd.

I read where someone had the trans governor?? worked on to repair this concern.
Has anyone had experience with this before?

Thanks in advance for any help you may provide.

I'd suspect the kickdown cable adjustment first. Go to the 700/900 FAQ's then to AW70 Automatic Transmission, then to Kickdown Cable Adjustment. There is a good discussion of how the cable works and how to adjust it.

Jim...I have checked the cable to make sure that it is moving properly with the throttle. I have good kickdown (downshift) so I don't think that the cable operation is the problem. I read the FAQs and it really didn't answer any questions that concern my problem.

Any other comments concerning this problem would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Try adjusting the nut on that downshift cable's adjustment sleeve until it's much looser than it is now. Then see if the behavior is still present. It sounds exactly like the downshift cable is too tight.
It could also be worn out, and may need replacement. It can be done with regular tools but does involve dropping the pan on the transmission.

Good luck with it, hope this helps.
