Ball joint replacement on 1984 240 200

On 1984 is it necessary to remove the strut to access the nut on the ball joint? My Haynes lists procedures for "later type" and "early type" but does not specify any years. Procedures for "early type" requires removal of the strut....hoping my 1984 does not as it looks like PIA.

Look at the bottom of the strut. If there's a plate held by 4 screws it's a later type: undo the plate (and the 3 bolts holding the BJ to the lower arm) and you can remove it, then take the plate off at your leisure and transfer it to the new BJ.

If there's no plate you're SOL and will need to disassemble the strut.
