Approximate value of '86 764 GLE??? 700 1986

Hello everyone,

Today I went with my Volvo mechanic to look at some Volvo's that another mechanic had for sale. One was a rotten (but appearently working) '85 or '86 745 GLE that the guy wanted $100 for. My mechanic said he'd take it (some good parts). The other was a '86 764 GLE (B28) that has been winter stored all it's life and was owned by an older couple since new. We found it in the guy's garage. We looked it over and I'd say it's at least a 8/10 for the year. The odo read 177K km and the body was excellent condition (probably better then my '91). Very little rust to be found anywhere. The headliner was sagging in the rear and the dash had some cracks, but otherwise the interior was excellent. It was beige leather that was supple with only a little wear on the driver's seat. The mechanic was replacing some coolant hoses (a common problem according to my mechanic) as well as the engine wiring harness (also common) and the exhaust (new Volvo, cat-back). It had a 1/2 worn set of Michelins on factory alloys and nice shiney paint (appeared to be original). The rear main seal appeared to be leaking (I was under the car). I'd say the car was well taken care of. I was just wondering what you guys think it's worth? How much longer do you think that B28 will go before it beats it's cams to death? How much trouble is that auto-climate control? I think it would make an excellent 'winter beater' for me (when fully rust-proofed of course), but I don't have a whole lot of money for a second car at the moment. Anyway, the guy is going to call my mechanic tomorrow and tell him what he wants for it. I want to know if the price is fair. Thanks!

Looked the car up at Kelly Blue Book. $1116.00 U.S. Dollars.
www.kbb.com Remember everyone thinks their car is worth more than it really is.
I have a Mint 87 745T zero rust and Zero dings in the body. Paint is mint, interior is mint. Everything works and all trim and interior in excellent to mint. The only marginal pieces are the dash it has 2 vertical cracks and the trim piece behind the passenger seat handhold above the door has a crack.
If that car ever gets hit or stolen I will get a whopping 1,800 dollars from the insurance company. My used 16" Hydras and Michelin Tires are worth $1200 alone.

Yeah, book value sucks! I don't wnat to know what the book value is in my '91 745T which is in very good shape. I paid $8500 CDN (~$5300 US) for it in Oct '01 and I've improved it since. A friend of my mechanic has a '83 245 that he bought in AZ about 5 years ago and brought to NS. The car was well rustproofed when it arrived here and was just repainted a month ago. It's mint for an '83. He said it's only worth something like $1300 CDN to his insurance company. It was apraised at $4000 CDN yesterday. I guess apraisals are the way to go......
