Parts compatibility questions 700

Hello guys/gals,

Before pulling a few items from the bone yard and then finding out if they work maybe someone with a parts fiche could help me out. I am looking to pull a volvo hitch off of a 1987 volvo wagon. Will it fit a 1989 740 sedan?

Also, would it be easier to pull out a locking differenial with the entire rear axle and transplant or to just disassemble the differencial and get the locking mechanism out of a 1988 Turbo sedan and stuff that bit into the diff on my car (1989 740 GL - Automatic). Are the carriers compatible?

Thanks in advance,

Tim

The trailer hitch is a direct swap as is a complete rear end.

If you remove the LSD from the 1988 turbo car it will need to be installed by a specialist in your rear end, if it is compatible. The turbo car will have a 1031 rear end and the ratio will be 3.73 (if North American market). The 1989 GL will have 1030 rear end with most likely a 4.10 ratio. I don't know if the LSD will exchange between those ratios and rear end types.

      John,
I have an 88 740 turbo sedan. I dont think my car has a locking differential but this is a tentative belief at best. Any time I have wheel spin on gravel, snow, rain or pavement only the right rear will spin. Also, the car has 240k. Is it possible that the locking mechanism (you will be able to tell how many times I've looked at a differential here) is gunked up and could benefit from an oil change? Just an (bad) idea.
I am basing this primarily on the difference I notice in the performance of my car now (above) and my former car, an 89 780 turbo. If you dropped the hammer in the 780 from a stop both tires would leave tracks. (not that I ever did this though)

      Jesse

As has been covered many times on the brickboard, the LSD was only a dealer installed option and it is very rare. When the Volvo LSD (it is a clutch type) needs a fluid change, it starts chattering. A fluid change with LSD additive will help the chatter. When the clutches wear out in a LSD, the rear end acts as a normal (open) rear end. If you find a tag like this on the rear end in your car, it s good news.

As far as I'm aware there is no hitch compatibility between the wagons and sedans - different rear configuration.

Personally I'd just pull the axle and not have to faff about installing and shimming. Pulling an axle on a 700/900 is pretty easy.

No Brams is wrong here, a tow hitch from a sedan will work fine on a wagon, on my 740 wagon I have a hitch from a 940 sedan and that was no problem.
