interior lights not working 700 1989

I recently purchased my first volvo, a used 1989 740 GLwagon. I am in the process of fixing those things that have been left in disrepair. While I am sure that I will have many questions in time, right now I am trying to make the interior lights functional. The lights will not turn on when the doors are opened. I swapped a switch button from one of the rear doors to the drivers door, that did not work. It did, however make the chime for the key sound [previously not working], but the keys where not in the ignition. I cleaned the screw ground, no help there. The lights will turn on with there individual switches. Any ideas?

do any of the door switches work, or does it not work with all doors? If all the doors are inop, i would check fuses or grounds first, maybe a problem with the light assembly itself, the replacement light assembly from volvo is a mod and you will need to change wire connectors.

If the lighs work on the permanent on, then this is a door contact problem. This is how it works. The light unit has three wires: live, permanent ground and door ground. The live is always there, ignition or no ignition, same goes for permanent ground. This makes it possible to switch on the lights at any time. The door ground is wired so that when any of the doors open, the ground circuit is closed and the light comes on. That ground circui uses the screw in the door switch so if that screw is rusty or the switch is rusty, it will not work. I suggest you go to your local dealer and buy foor door switches, you will leave with change from a ten dollar bill. It might, I do agree, be worth checking that the switches inside the light work. Pry off the light unit and check that the metal is making contact in the light when door open position. With that light off, you can also easily check with multimetre if they get power with door open.
