anyone mounted stand-alone tweeters? 700

Hey, has anyone out there mounted separate woofers and tweeters in their 740 brick? I'd like to upgrade the soundsystem a bit on mine.

Where did you install the tweeters? Were they flush-mounted?

any tricks and tips?

Thanks

I just uploaded new pictures to my web site. Follow the "Projects, finished and ongoing" link. Scroll down. The 240 rear shelf is made for tweeters!

Dude, those tweeters look cool. Have you noticed an improved sound response as a result? I mean, can you tell the difference now that they are there?

Well, I installed the woofer, filter and tweeter as a complete package. I never tried the main speakers alone so I cannot comment on what difference the tweeters make. All I can say is that I like'em, as far as I can tell they were worth the good reviews. The filters have provisions for adjusting the tweeters' relative sound level (relative to the woofers), so you can fine-tune the set-up to your preferences.

I mounted some kenwood tweeters on the front and back door posts on my 240 and replaced the door speakers with some 5 1/2" kenwoods. THe way I installed the tweets was by just running them in successoin with the door speakers. You should be able to find some crossover type sircuits to limit the freq running from the larger door speakers

When I had my 740, I bought some Radio Shack tweeters, just for cars and they cost about 20 bux, and put them on top of the door panel by the rear view mirror cover plate. I soldered tham in parallel with the door speakers. They sounded good too.

I didn't buy any subs because I like my hearing, personal preference.

Tweeters do far worse to your hearing than subs.

I was also thinking about adding some tweeters.
Just added some 2 more speakers (midranges) behind
the back seats. Also installed 2 Goldwood 8inch subs
in the trunk, sounds pretty good..

To a previous post. Token Ring Man didnt want
subs cause he likes his hearing. Its a common
misconception that sub woofers hurt your ears.
Sub woofers are probably the safest of all kinds
of speakers, gotta watch out for the tweeters
cause those can easily hurt your hearing (2000hz +)
Any who.. Go for subs, they make a big difference.

I did ... but in my 240. I found a set of German-made Sinus-Live speakers that had received good reviews ("Testsieger!":-) and the set consisted of two 16 cm (6.3") woofers, two 3 cm (1.2") tweeters and a pair of frequency filters. http://www.carhifi-shop.com/p748.html

I mounted all the speakers flush with the rear shelf, where they look and sound very good (-to my admittedly ageing ears). I adjust the front-rear sound level to emphasize the rear slightly more than the front door units. The tweeters came with grills for flush mounting, but also with brackets for dashboard mounting.

There is nothing particularly sophisticated about this set-up, it attaches to my Kenwood radio/cd (4x47W) like any normal set of speakers would. I do not feel the need for anything more than this though.
