In case you are interested:
The Swedish insurance company Folksam has studied more than 76,000 real car crashes, and found SAAB 9-5 to be the safest car of all. "If everybody replaced their cars with 9-5s, the number of people injured or killed would immediately be reduced with 40%", the vice research manager states to one of the national newspapers.

As I intend to keep my brick, I scrolled down to see how the 200 series scored. It was found to be at least 15% safer than the average car, a position it shares with Audi A6 (1995-97), BMW 5 (1996-03) and Mercedes 200/300 (1886-95) to name a few. Nothing is mentioned about airbags, but as we know this was fitted to a minority of the 200 series.

This reminds me that the British magazine CAR for years described Volvos as "... after Saab, the safest car built in Sweden."

Sweden has a total population of about 8.8 million, or slightly more than New Jersey.

Their rankings are always interesting. I'd never buy a Citroën AX, I'm sure.....

I'd weight the US Insurance Institute for highway Safety rankings a little more, since the sample is larger. Also, you really can't compare 10 year old cars with brand new cars, just because the drivers differ so much. Owners of 12 year old Hyundais will drive a little differently than drivers of brand-new S600 Benzes, this shows up in the collision frequency.

Good old Ithaca, the 240 capitol of New York state, where else would they parade their decked out bricks?

There seem to be a few vehicles missing from the comparison.
