164 overheating 140-160 1972

Hi i have a 72 164E and am having trouble with the engine overheating and loosing water. I cant see any water marks or anything on the ground after running it. In the mornings some water does come out of the exaust but it seems a little too much to be just condensation. please help.

    Don't forget to check the heater hoses. My 164 developed a pin hole leak in the heat hose at the back of the block. I knew I was losing water but it took awhile to find it. If the heater hoses are more than 10 years old you probably should replace them.

    It can be hard to see radiator leaks due to the tight 164 engine compartment, but most of these old radiators are rotten. Take it out and look for green copper corrosion or wetness on the bottom or any of the tank seams. MAybe you can see something through the grille.
    SInce they're copper/brass you can get them repaired at a radiator shop, unlike the plastic/aluminum ones in newer cars.

    Check the oil. If the water is escaping the motor, it
    can only go a couple places and the sump is a common one.

    Is it a fuel injected or carbed car? The carbed cars are
    more prone to overheating.

    My car was quite prone to overheating until I replaced the
    t-stat with a 160 degree unit and recored the radiator. It
    still sometimes runs a bit on the warm side.

    If you did overheat your motor, you may have blown the head
    gasket and very likely warped the intake/exhaust manifold if
    it is carbed. None of this stuff is very hard to fix or very
    expensive.
