R-134 upgrade Volvo kit 200 1983

I just received the Volvo R-134 upgrade kit for my 83 245. It has a new condensor. Is this the one that goes behind the heater in the dash?
Anyone doen this before? What is the toughest part?
Thanks,
el Raidman

I performed the conversion on my wife's 87 240 and the end result was a great working a/c. The dealer should be able to copy the section of the service bulletin that deals with the conversion. If you cannot get it, email me and I will send it to you.
I would recommend that you also replace all of the a/c hoses, since they are of the older material and have a much higher leak rate as compared to the new barrier style hoses. These hoses can be ordered at any import auto parts store and are usually made in the USA using goodyear hose. Also I purchased a new R12 expansion valve and recharged the system with R12. I was really amazed at how well the a/c cools now even in 100 deg weather.
I spent $140 for the volvo conversion kit and $135 for all of the hoses and expansion valve.

That's the evaporator; yes, it goes in the heater housing.
I've done it; there's no tough part.

      Thanks McD:
Is it as tough as replacing the blower motor? What has to be removed to get to the evaporator location?

It is nowhere near as complicated as replacing the blower motor. Not even close. The evaporator is located behind the center console (where the radio is). You access it by removing the passenger side knee bolster and the center console side cover. Take off the expansion valve and the evaporator is located just inboard of the expansion valve. There is a strap type mechanism holding it in, and you need to disconnect two hoses. It slides out. Have a vacuum cleaner and clean out all the dog hair, leaves, etc that may be in the evaporator compartment.

          Thanks, Mike:
I'll get on it tonight. I live in Brownsville (named after Jacob Brown) and my daughter goes to Brown University. Any relation to you?
Again, thanks for the encouraging directions.

Seems like I remember seeing a picture that made it look like it kinda "slid" in from the right and that the airbox and crap didn't need to be disassembled.

Glad mine was converted before I bought it, although I don't know if it got the new evap. or not. There was a sticker under the hood from a Texaco stating it had been converted and it didn't blow up when I recharged it...

        Have fun,

        Justin B.
