Benchtop Hydraulic Shop Press 6 ton or 12 ton? 200

I know some of you out there use a hydraulic press for the 240 bushings [not rear trailing arms]. but how strong a press is really needed?Northern tools sells them reasonably.6 to or 12 ton? Also what are you using as drivers? Will sockets work or maybe some type of plunbing fittings ala "home brew tool"? Thanks for the advice.

    I've used a 6 ton and it really isn't strong enough. I bought a 15 ton and
that really takes care of business. Sockets are 'OK' but they aren't always
as good as steel drifts. You can actually buy the proper drift tools from
Volvo. I them but I still ended up having one receiver piece made by a machine
shop. Minimum in my opinion is the 12 ton.

    12 ton will do.
As for drifts, sockets will generally work but you can't always count on having one the right size. If you know someone with a metal lathe you can use a micrometer to take some measurements of the new bushings and turn a section of steel pipe to the right diameter (something slightly less than the diameter of the bushing).

BIGGER is always better!!(at least, that's what my girlfriend says) Get the 12 ton. Make the Homebrew tool and DO IT.

You might check out www.harborfreight.com also. They sell a 20 ton on sale occasionally for a mere $159 with free shipping.

Benchtop Hydraulic Shop Press 6 ton or 12 ton? Thanks! 200

Thanks to all who replied. Looks like a 12 ton press at the least. Now to find a 'friend" at a machine shop!
