240 1988 Odometer does not work.... how difficult is it to change out?

My odometer on my 88 240 quit... I was suprised to find out that my speedometer still works but my odometer does not... I'd really like to see the car turn over 300k but it is stuck on 254K.. Is it a difficult repair? Thanks, Jennifer

Randy is right as usual. But having done a few dozen, I say you can do it with instructions. Not hard, in an hour you can do it. Just one place for disaster: do not hook a red/white wire to anything unless you have a tach. Write if you want full instructions. Also, the little replacement gear has to be seated correctly and I have done it wrong 10% of the time until I learned it is not quite fool-proof.

Get the gear from Jeff Kaplan as Randy suggests. Your dealer will want to "help" by selling you a $750 speedometer. I will organize my instructions for the proceedure.

          Hi,
Did anyone post the instructions for replacing the gear?
I can get the cluster out with no problem, but I'm hesitant to pull the
speedo needle off. Does it just pull off and then remove the two screws to access the gear? Thanks in advance for any advise or help.
          Chip

IF you decide to go deep into this (risky) then use two spoons to pry the needle off and remove teh screws holding the plate. You eill have to replace the needle at the position it came off too, so that might be a factor. Have you just tried to find the gear first? That operation does not require such a drastic surgery.

I have the same problem, odometer doesn't work, speedometer does. Are these repair instructions posted anywhere? No Volvo dealer within 100 miles. It would help if I could give the mechanic some guidance. Alternatively, there is a place 100 miles away that repairs these units. What has to be removed to get to the part that needs repair? If the odometer is broken, does that mean the speedometer will give out soon? I looked in the Bentley book, to no avail.

          Thanks, Colleen

Most odometer failures (electronic speedos, 86-93) are caused by a tiny plastic gear that looses teeth. It is just under the electric motor on the side of the odometer. Available from Jeff Kaplan at a modest cost. Simple 20 minute repair when you have the cluster removal routine down. If it is not the gear, then there is a small chip on the board by the gear FM or UAF 2115 that is the culprit. This one might be harder to find a source for? These are in junkyards though. Other than those two components and the wires to the motor glued to teh circuit board not much else goes wrong. Your speedometer is not going to fail just because the odometer does.

Thanks very much for sharing the info. I take it that I need to tell the (non-Volvo) mechanic that he has to remove the entire cluster before the specific problem can be ascertained, right?

I think you can tell him that if he gets the gear from odometergears.com and installs it carefully in the silver motor, you will have a successfully repaired odometer. Should take him an hour at the most. There is a 10% (roughly) chance that the chip is the problem vs. 90% chance it is the gear. The gear is broken in 75% of the cars I look at in the junkyard. You might be able to do the repair yourself. You should get the gear for him so the repair requires minimal down time.

It is a fairly common problem. There is a small gear in the speedometer that fails. Several options: (1) find used replacement speedometer and install in gauge cluster (2) Purchase replacement gear and install in existing speedometer. Both options require that you remove the cluster from the dash- not a monumental task but I don't know what skill level you or a helper may have. The gear is avaiiable at: http://members.ispwest.com/jkcaplan/gearwebpage/gear.html

    Good luck
    Randy
