Scan-Tech Strikes Again 200 1985

Hi Bricksters, Wel another Scan-Tech story: Thought I would buy a back up fuel pump relay for my 85 240 Ti since alot of you think it's a good idea to have a spear one. Well I ordered one from FCP Groton(Great parts place and good people) who I have used alot. So the first one I recieved didn't start the 3 sec. pre pump when you turn the key to the 1st. position (my old one does) so I called and thay sent another one out right away. Guess what? that one was the same.So now I have 2 relays to ship back and no spare in the trunk.Has anyone had this problem with Scan-Tech Fuel P ump Relays? I also checked the part # to make sure it was for the 85 Turbo and it was. What do you all think? Charlie

Hey I love a Scan Tech story as much as the next guy, but where comes from this notion that the pumps in a Volvo are run to pressurize with key on? I realize occasionally this will happen by chance, depending on where the distributor stopped, but the relay is designed to make when the ignition ground circuit is pulsed.

I am curious who actually made your relays, just for the sake of learning what drives the global aftermarket for cars over 10 years old made for 18.

I always assumed that's what was supposed happen. When the pumps do energize, starting is easier... and it does seem to be more or less a random thing. Sometimes I can turn the key without starting the car and the pumps will energize, when five minutes to a later (still having not started the car) the pumps won't do squat.

Further, MegaSquirt is designed to run the pumps for about 2 seconds on power-up, and it will turn the pumps off if the engine hasn't started by then. On a more interesting note, according to the MS web site, some Corvettes had an oil pressure switch that was designed to act as a backup in case the relay itself failed (it would energize the pumps if the oil pressure was > some really small amount).

I don't know about the relays, but I did have a problem with a "Scan Tech" timing belt tensioner. As it turned out, the bad "Scan Tech" tensioner was an INAF 218999 which is a tensioner many Brickboarders have used successfully for a long time. I called IPD to see which tensioner they sold, in case they had a better one, and it turned out they sell the same one, INAF 218999, in a Bilstein box for about twice the money. Nick at Groton kindly replaced the bad one and told me that the same tensioner is sold under a variety of company names. So, in my case, I guess it really wasn't Scan Tech's fault. However, I've heard enough reports about Scan Tech's quality control that I too am a bit suspicious when I hear the name.

I've had mispackaged front wheel bearings from them. They were the correct part
number. But there was no way the bearings could slide over my spindle. I think
they packaged the early 240/140 bearings in a box marked for my application.

I just wish someone with them would pay a bit more attention to quality
control. I appreciate that they seem to want to supply a large selection
of parts for our cars but it does really get disheartening when you
have multiple problems with the delivered goods. Hopefully things will get
better. I recommend going to a pickandpull type salvage yard. It's the
best way to get backup relays for a lot of the different circuits. For like
$20 or less you'll be able to buy 5 or more relays. Many times junked cars have
new relays in them for important functions like the fuel pump.

    Best regards,
    Dave 82 242ti
