Tap and die 900

I just purchased 940 Wagon. Found massive transmission fluid leak around the drain hole. I think the transmission pan drain hole thread is damaged.

I read a faq on tap & die as a possible repair technique. Is this something that is easy to do? What is the OEM drain plug size, and what size do I need to tap with?

First, take the car to a self-serve car wash and thoroughly clean the pan and tranny area. Then look for the leak. A leaking rear seal can blow oil back to the pan area and make it appear that the pan is leaking. A leaking pan gasket can also drip in that area.

If you discover that the pan bolt thread is gone, you can try one of three things:

    1. Get a tap at Sears and carefully re-tap the hole. Get a new pan bolt and aluminum washer at your dealer and reinstall. See if this works.
    2. Use a Permatex thread repair kit, which is an epoxy that sets and reinforces the threads.
    3. Get an all-new pan and bolt for about $60 from www.borton.com.

Why do you think the threads are damaged? That would be unusual unless some idiot overtightened or crossthreaded the bolt. Have you removed the bolt? The threads do not create the seal, it is a brass colored washer that is compressed when you tighten the bolt that seals. Maybe that washer is missing or needs replacement, check that out first before you assume anything needs retapping or whatever. Remember also that a leak elsewhere may allow the fluid to run down or blow back and drip off that bolt giving the impression that the leak is there.

Not sure I'd try it. If it fails and fluid is lost, you're out a couple of big ones. And a lot of inconvenience.
Try a wrecking yard or a transmission shop for a used but sound pan.
Not sure, but transmision may even be one that is used in other cars and pan can be available from other sources.
Maybe someone in the site can advise.
