What to look for in the junk yard???? 200

I went to the junkyard on Monday, first time ever looking for Volvo stuff. I found a 262 Bertone with the turbo wheels and grille I was looking for. Paid next to nothing for this stuff. Now, I'm new to this, and these parts are obvious, even to a beginner, but what should I look for that's not so obvious? I heard about a 23mm rear swaybar off a '79 GT... And you can often find aftermarket parts on junkers, but... How do I recognize IPD swaybars versus stock swaybars? How do I measure stock swaybars on a car that has been stripped of its identity? What are the good, really hard to find parts I should be looking for? Someone else mentioned an airdam scoop that directs flow to the radiator. Opinions?

I also saw a bertone in the junkyard i go to in Phoenix. It had the 5 spoke turbo wheels i wanted, but didn't have the money at the time :-( This junkyard only charges $20 bucks a wheel too! Michael

Was it gold, and missing the passenger side rear quarter window? I took those wheels and the grille yesterday, sorry. It's at Ecology on 27th ave in Phoenix...

HA! I was just there last week. Damn, I went to Arizona Auto right next door and didn't even realize it wasn't Ecology. You would not have found those wheels if I had been there first. What really pisses me off is I first went to Hirsch, right around the corner and dropped $120 on stuff I could have found at those pic-n-pulls for $25. There's a '83 240 Turbo over at Arizona Auto. It looks to be Canadian or Euro spec because the speedo was in KPH. It still has the scoop for the radiator, I only took the air dam, no wheels though and the rest of it has been pretty picked over.

    Take the whole Bertone!!! 200

Heck, if the Bertone is in one piece (not totaled from an accident), see if the parts yard will sell you the whole car. There's people who will buy it, and some of them frequent this board. Consider the fact that they had a VERY limited production run of only 6,622 vehicles in the aproximately 4 years that they were made (1977-1981).

This board member bought a Bertone from a parts yard:

Ah well, what to look for! The rarest are the oil temp and ambient temp, probably. You have to pull the senders! Rear window louvers (Volvo brand accessories are always the best, 240) rear spoiler (200 or 700), wagon cargo cover, Hydra wheels, center armrests (with cupholders get bonus points), rear decor panel and on and on, things never seen by most Bricksters. Then too, look for any new parts with the blue Volvo sticker. Lots of things get replaced only to have the cars go to salvage soon after. Turbos are great to grab. The GT is gold in '79 too for the rear bar and the front springs and strut braces. Look for the lower braces as well. R sport gauges are wonderful, yellow on black. IPD bars are often gold but when covered in grime you can be tipped off by an enthusiasts gauges or wheels etc. at first glance. Those are the guys that fit bars. Just do it and you will soon be hooked on the treasures you will find if you work hard enough at it.

The oil temp gauge is rare?

Shit, I should just sell my wagon.

It's got the lower half of the coin tray, oil temp gauge+sender, 5 bar oil pressure gauge, locking Volvo gas cap, 3rd seat, power moonroof (!), cruise... and I'll even throw in a nice purple fuzzy dash cover and two real nice corduory front seats :-D

Things I pulled at the pic-n-pull last week for resale: Turbo air dam, slush mats, center front arm rests, tachs, small clocks, door pockets, a B21FT wiring harness, and leather shift boots. I only had 4 hours to scrounge so I pulled the easy stuff. Like Jordan said, If you can get the rare guages, (oil temp, ambient temp, economy) they will bring some good money. Just type "Volvo 240" into Ebay and scroll through the pages to see the approximate value of stuff.

Bob, I might be interested in the armrest. I need a Tan one. Preferably the style with single attachment to the drivers seat and sans cup-holders. Are you selling on EBay?

To measure the diameter of the sway bars. Take an open ended wrench, find one that fits snug, you just figured out its diameter

I look for turbo's, manifolds, sway bars, springs (some cars will have an IPD sticker some where, or on the bars). I also look for rare gauges (little tach, ambient temp gauge etc).
