Car Broken-engine does not 'fire up' 140-160 1972

Hi, my car, a 1972 Volvo 164 will not start. Making cranking sounds but no action. I know the battery's good(just bought). Has new plugs. and enought gas to start up and drive the two blocks to the station(3 or 4 gal).
I'm no mechanic, so help me out please!
-George

    Check underhood fuses . 140-160 1972

Check the fuses, and the ones under the hood as well.
    Smell fuel at the exhaust?
CHeck spark by pulling a sparkplug, grounding the body on the valve cover, and watching for spark as you crank the engine.

I had the same problem with my 142 after a few winters storage. I cleaned the plugs and checked to see that the fuel injectors connections were clean from corrosion. After that it started right up and I have been driving daily for months.

Do you hear the fuel pump running (assuming fuel injection)?
If it was empty, I'd put more gas in it.
