410000 miles, and still going!! 200 1980

Isn't that a beautiful sight? So many miles in so many years. I really don't think this car will ever die.

I've since pushed it to 412K. This car is my junker, no less! A true testament to how well these cars were built. It's never had an engine rebuild! Still going strong.

I know this post serves no purpose, but I'm so proud of my never quit car.

By the way, I've since added a tach to this one.

My other '80 (and less junkier) is only at 215000. Knowing an identical car went almost twice it's mileage makes me like the outlook!

Just like Irv would say .... Change your oil every 3000 miles ..and if something breaks .. FIX it .....

Congratulations! You get your mileage badges yet? You should, they're free!
I'm sure the Volvo people like to send out 4 at once!
I'm not sure exactly what it was about that particular year, but 1980s seem to be SO reliable. The highest mileage car I've ever been in was a 1980 242. It was on its third owner, in the same family (grandpa - dad - son). It had 505,000 on the clock and that was a couple years ago. It still didn't skip a beat.
Another friend's 1979 242GT went over 400000 and had never even been apart for a head gasket. That is amazing longevity to me and the whole reason, in my mind, for driving these cars forever. Total cost of ownership over that time period has to be SO LOW on a per-mile basis- I don't think any other vehicle can compare.
Me, I have every intention of getting all of mine to 300K, but hopefully they won't rust away first. The 87 is closest at 235K, then the 86 at 211K, the 88 at 199K, and the 91 at 180K.

    Any secrets to longevity?

Regular oil changes for one. Always have used 10w-40. Never missed a change. Never. Always change the fluids at the proper intervuls. I also don't exactly... street race in the car. I rarely redline it (only when passing, if that). Anything broken, I take care off. I don't take care of strange noises by just turning the radio up (heh heh heh). Check the oil weekly. If you consistantly, key word is CONSISTANTLY maintain your car, you shouldn't have too many problems, espically with this year of the 240 it seems.

I have had to replace the transmission on this one once, back in '94. Don't remember the mileage then, but it was pretty high. It also helps that this is a stick shift, much more efficient.

Don't know what else, maybe I just got lucky. It's great, insurrance is pretty cheep for this thing, although gas is killing me up here... $1.89/gal, and that's the regular Arco crap!

Thats so great! I know how you feel. My car is a spectacle among friends and family cause it has 500,000+ miles on it the speedo was originally changed out at 120,000 and the new has 300,000 And there was a period of 2 years when the speedo cable was broken and noone fixed it until recently!!! I have owned the car for a little under 2 years and Love it 2 death. I am 3rd owner and have to say that the previous 2 took mighty good car of her. I'll try to include a pic =)
