it just wont start! HELP PLEASE VETERANS! PLEASE READ! 200 1983

im new here, please help me out! ok heres the deal...i have an 83 240 turbo. the problem is it will not start...and when it does, it will not run (idle) on its own. this started on sunday morning when i ran the tank to empty (**first thing to take into consideration**) i went to get some gas, and put 16 oz of fuel injector cleaner(i thought it could use some as it seemed like it needed it) in with about 10 gallons of fuel (twice as much cleaner as it said... but i wasnt paying attention...) on the way home from the station, the car would not idle. if i let off the gas it would die. at every light i had to start it again, until at one it just wouldnt start anymore. thats where i am now. if i charge the battery and wait a while it will start, but it will not idle. it purs running at 2000-3000 rpm, and WILL sit at 1000 if i have a tiny bit of gas, but upon letting off the gas it dies. (this is in park/neutral) i was at school all day and it charged all last night, when i got home i changed the spark plugs and started it up and it had the same symptoms of not idling. (the plugs had been indicating a rich mixture)** take into consideration**

so far, i have changed those plugs, checked the resistance in the ignition coil (perfect), checked the ballast resistor (looks good), looked for vacuum leaks (cant find any). i dont think it is idle speed as it was working fine the week before ALTHOUGH almost the whole time i have had the car is has bobbled with the idle but recovered (rpms goes up and down from 500-1250 until it stablizes right under 1000) battery charge is ok.

so, i dont know what else to do! ive been looking for the air mass meter but i dont exactly know where it is because it looks different than all the pictures i have seen. is it the thing on the air intake with all the fuel tubes running to it and then to the fuel injectors???

i have narrowed down the possibilities to air problems, (air mass meter) fuel problems ( clogged air filter from running my gas all the way down) or something else electrical... I pressure washed the engine saturday morning but it ran fine all of saturday and sunday morning until i ran the gas to completely empty. what else could it be????

please reply or email me at *chrisahl66@hotmail.com* as i am in extreme need of help! thanks everyone so much for reading - chris ahl

Whoa! There is no AMM to chase. It sounds just like a torn hose or misplaces vacuum line. The in-tank pump might be a problem and if a full tank of gas solves the problem you know is is a failed connector hose in the tank. Real common and simple to fix. You should also consider swapping the fuel pump relay.

I recently had problems similar to what you are describing. The local Volvo specialist diagnosed a bad fuel pressure regulator at a cost of $200 cdn ($130 USD). The car later wouldn't start, and this was diagnosed to be a bad main fuel pump ($500 cdn, $330 USD). I don't know if the problem was a combination of both or not. But, given that the fpr is cheaper, you might want to start there. The replacement was rebuilt, a new one is pretty pricey, or so I am told.

Good luck!

You ran the tank to empty...

I can think that maybe you are suffering from a bad in-tank pump/hose assembly, maybe it took in a piece of the broken fuel hose inside the tank and not enough fuel can be drawn out of the tank at idle... possibility.

Otherwise try unplugging your AMM (engine off). It is the cylindrical large thing inline with the intake, it should have a connector on it. Unplug the connector and see if it starts up. If it runs much better, then that is the issue.

Good luck,

what exactly do i unplug? i think i found the connector, its runnning from a tube of wires on the left side of the engine bay. it had a 2 prong connector that runs to some other wires that run right under the intake tube behind the hair box, and into a metal flange that looks lke its running into the AMM, if i am looking at the right thing for the AMM - thanks - chris ahl

No AMM in CIS 200 1983

Chris, you're ok, there is NO Air Mass Meter on a CIS equipped car. All the 240 turbos use CIS so you're just fine.
