Rough idle 200

My 83 wagon(EFI)is running rough when cold.Engine hunts but kicks in at 2000 rpm then runs smoothly.Performance improves a bit when it warms up but still a dead spot on acceleration.Mechanic says any number of things could be causing this so he was hesitant to try to track the problem -not knowing the history of maintenance. What checks should I be doing to try to trace the cause?Any advice appreciated.Thanks.

    Rough idle 200

Vacuum leaks, such as the intake manifold gasket or injector seals, are a common source of rough idle and poor low speed performance.

    But then, so's a varnished-up throttle body.

And crummy ignition components don't help, either.
