on the front of it. Is this normal, did all 140s come with 4 piston Girling calipers on them? Or is this a brake upgrade that the prev. owner didn't tell me about... Thanks,

It's stock. ABS electronics aside, it's rare for a new much more expensive car to have brakes that good.

When you need to order brake pads remember that they are Girling - they put ATE or Girling calipers on depending on what container came in last to the factory and the pads don't interchange.

How do you plan to implement dual path braking with an odd number of
pistons?

Far as I know, from the introduction of the 140s onward all Volvos had
4 piston front calipers. Back calipers had 2 pistons as each rear brake
was on a separate brake circuit.
