noise and vibration in gear box

Hello, this is my first visit to brick board so please be gentle with me.
I've just aquired a 1988 740 gle, not yet purchased a workshop manual. This car is excellent condition except for a noise and vibration which seams to be the rear end of the gearbox, can anyone shed some light? Also do these auto boxes use ep80/90 gearbox oil or is it just ATF and if so how do I top this up.
Thanks in antisipation
phasa

Welcome I'm not sure about the trans on a 740 but i'm 99% sure it does not use 80 or 90 weight my guess is dextron atf (thats what my 245's use)but check with someone else before you add anything, for the viberation I'd check the u joints on the drive shaft first.
Good luck
Bret

If anyone is interested the problem with the vibration was the the gearbox crosss member mounting rubber had perished, leaving the gearbox resting on the cross member.

You might check the motor mounts as well, as these are also apt to perish. My my my but I do love the way you Bislanders talk. Can you get Brains where you are?
