Has anyone done a B230FT in a '86 or newer 240? 200

I have a '85 740 Turbo that I would like to put the engine into a 240. I think the turbo engine doesn't have any electrical dependencies, it's all mechanical. So, it should be a fairly straight forward install.

Areas of concern:

-distributor-> don't know if the 740 equipment (A/C, Alternator) would get in the way of the 240 distributor.
-Airbox placement-> I was thinking of removing the airbox altogether for a K&N cone filter in front of the AMM.
-Computer/Wiring->don't know if the computer from the 740 would work on the 240 wiring harness.

Has anyone done this exchange? If so, what kind of problems did you have, and how did you get around them.

Thanks-

Paul

It can be done but it is not for the average "change the oil" mechanic.
'87 240 turbo hope I got the html right.

After reading that page (again), I got the impression that the fuel and ignition computers shared a wiring harness. However, Dave Barton's page mentions that the ignition harness is separate from the fuel one on the 240s. Is the ignition computer connected via one of the fender harnesses on the 740s?

Thanks for the link- Looks like a great job!! Always makes me wonder why Volvo didn't use the B230FT in the 240 models. I love the power of my 740T, hate how the interior falls apart.

Paul

BTW-I've done a couple of conversions on Volvos. My wife drives a '82 240 that was a Diesel, now it has everything (except the body of a '86 240-> complete Fuel system/electrical system/drive train )from a '86 240. I've done many engine installations, clutch jobs, etc (worked at a Volvo shop during my college years).

Sounds like you're a prime canidate to do a job like this. I couldn't agree more about wishing Volvo had continued the turbo 240 switching to LH injection in '86 along with the body change. One can only wonder at what they were thinking.

Unlike the 240T, the 740T has electronic fuel injection.

But isn't that because the 240T's had the B21FT engine, whereas the 740T's got the B230FT? Just a thought.

Bob

Yes, the 240 Turbos only had the B21FT engines. Volvo stopped producing them in 1985.

I want to place a B230FT Turbo engine setup into a '86 or newer 240 that has a B230F normally aspirated engine. Same fuel injection system (LH electronic). Should be a simple swap. Looks like it should fit right in, except for the noted concerns (airbox, distributor, etc.). Just wanted to get some info before I started into this project. I just worked on a project(a '65 Volvo 122 with a '79 B21 engine), and I couldn't find any reference to how anyone else has done it in the past (or if it was done at all). Became a very time consuming project. Just want to make it as easy, and well done as possible.

Thanks for all the input,

Paul
