Grey residue from tailpipe, slight ruf idle & chk eng on??? 200 1989

Any ideas as to the above described conditions would be greatly appreciated, just got the car. 89 245dl w/235k, 1 owner with xlnt maint records and all the right parts replaced, clutch, t-belt, pump etc. TIA for your help.. Tom Wasney 240aholic

You need to pull the codes from the OBD diagnostic socket to see why the check engine light is going on. Use the info here in the 700/900 FAQ feature area to do this and to help interpret the code(s).

Other things that come to mind: Excess condensation in exhaust system or new exhaust system with joint leaks? Cat converter starting to break up? -shake cat up and down and listen for loose pieces. Maybe something as simple as clearing the codes and giving it a real good highway drive will set it right.
