Vacuum pump for cruise 900 1994

Cruise giving me fits. I've had the vacuum pump off, checked it with a tester, took the cover off and sealed the gasket with silicon grease. When I first started working on it, the cruise would work first time, then quit. Since I've been 'fooling' with it, now it won't engage at all. Going on a trip tomorrow and I'm afraid I'll have to find a stick. At least I have power seats to adjust the speed....

There is a vacuum dump switch actuated by the brake pedal (look under the dash where the brake pedal lever is) that opens the vacuum circuit to the atmosphere in order to disconnect the cruise whilst braking. It is a common failure item which will keep the cruise fom engaging. It may also just be out of adjustment, you can thread it in and out to do so. Barring that, it may be loose contacts (you said it works intermittently?) or a control box problem (find a used one).

Thanks Bob for the suggestions. I'll go out and disconnect the vac dump switch and plug it, then try the cruise. If that doesn't work, any suggestions where to find a used control box? And where did Volvo hide that critter?

I think they are in different places depending on the year so start under the dash. I'd check out a local junk yard for the box. If you can find one that specializes in Volvos they should have a few lying around, maybe even already removed. I'm blessed with a couple of good ones (junk yards, or should I say salvage yards to be PC?) here in Atlanta metro.
