Too Much Fuel ? 700

Greetings,

On one of our 700's, a 740 GL, when cold starting if the engine doesn't fire quickly it seems that excessive fuel is pumped and you can smell fuel. The MAF is new and the injectors. I didn't replace the cold start as I have never found one with too much fuel. I strange thing is if you hold the throttle to the floor and then crank, it will almost always start and run OK. It does not appear to flood.
Does this make sense to anyone ? Thank you very much.

I would go to the temperature sensor(s). Either the NTC sensor that senses engine operating temp or a separate cold temp switch sends a signal to the ecu re fuel injection for starting.

What is your fuel pressure doing while all this is going on? What is idle fuel pressure? 700

I have the exact same probelm on a 1990 Regina system 740 non-turbo. The plugs get fouled with gas when it is cold but you can get it going if you hold the pedal to the floor. I disconnected the fuel to the cold start valve, which made no difference, and took the wires off the engine coolant temp sending unit, which made no difference. The car runs perfectly except for this cold start problem. Obvious things like dist cap, plugs, plug wires have all been changed, but made no difference. Just replaced the Mass air meter thing in the intake hose (a special Regina non-Bosch two wire type) and it made no difference. Any other ideas? Turbodog3 and I definitely have the exact same problem. Thanks all

Ginaune, I am going after the fuel pressure regulator and will replace the cold start ???? Perhaps it adds to much fuel ? I will post if I learn anything during the project.

I am currently having 5.0 L problems and the 740gl will wait until after the 5.0 is fixed.

Thanks, that's great. I'm quite sure we have the same problem. Deactivating both fuel and power to the cold start valve did not help me. I have been reluctant to think it's the fuel pressure regulator as it only has problems with cold starts -- reuns fine otherwise. I once had a fuel pressure reg. fo on a 240 and it was running very badly -- almost not at all actually. We'll get to the bottom of this eventually. thanks again. my e-mail is ginaune@yahoo.com

replaced idle air valve and fuel pressure regulator, but made no difference. my next step will be to work on the throttle position switch. according to the factory manual, it supposedly tells the ECU whether the the throttle is either fully open or closed (implying that it does not care about in-between positions). if it is indicating that the throttle is fully open when it is in fact closed, then the mixture might be much too rich on cold starts?????? just a theory, and don't know what else to try.

Check your idle air control valve. Worth a try?
