Synthetic fluids in 1995 960 Sedan 900 1995

I am considering replacing most fluids with synthetic in my 195 960 sedan and wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this. I would use Amzoil engine oil, brake fluid, and transmission fluid. I am hopeful it will result in less wear, and better performance. I do know that in either event, I need to have the systems professionaly vacuumed when switching, and that filters should be changed frequently after the switch to synthetic because of the better cleansing properties of synthetic. All thoughts are welcome.

    Mike R,

I changed our 95 960 over to synthetic at 109,000 miles (when we bought it). I changed over to M1 10W-30 with Mann filters. Kept the same change interval. No flush.

The trans fluid at 109,000 was like chocolate syrup. I flushed with regular ATF and have been slowly removing and adding 2.5 qts. of M1 ATF at every oil change.

I have been partially changing the brakes and PS to synthetic as well using the same procedure of removing all the old oil I could get at and then refilling with fresh synthetic.

Good choice. Both the engine and tranny will benefit. You can do your own tranny fluid flush by following the instructions in the 700/900 FAQ. The engine oil just needs to be drained, although you can clean things up a bit before the synthetic by adding a bottle of CD-2 Oil Detergent (Walmart) which is not snake oil. You might also try finding a service station with the Bilstein Oil Flush system, which pumps hot detergent around the engine to de-sludge it. I've done it and it is effective. The brakes merely need to be bled with the new fluid added at the reservoir.
