DAS messed up my Classic 240 200 1993

Hello everybody,
This is my first posting to this list. I recently bought a 1993 240 Classic wagon with 97,000 miles on ebay. I had DAS ship it from Pa. to Arizona. When it arrived, there was a huge(1 foot by 1 foot) scrape/dent on the hood and right fender. I haven't seen the car yet as I live in Japan and won't come home until April. It's at my friend's house. What happened was when they were loading another car on the carrier, a hydraulic ramp dropped on to the hood. DOH!! They said this hardly ever happens. My question is: what should I expect from them for reimbursement? I need a new hood and fender. I found a hood on a website for $200 and a fender for $140. I would think they would give me well over $1000. Is it a big job to change the fender? Thanks for any info on the costs and the difficulty of replacing the fender.

Jerome

    I wouldn't bother changing the panels yourself. If DAS said they did it, they'll probably just take care of the damage repair bill. I'm sure their insurance carrier will pick up the tab (or they'll just pay it).

    Basically, you shouldn't have to touch the repair job yourself.

      i second that 200 1993

      Depending on their policy either you or DAS should pick a body shop and get an estimate, then DAS will cover the bill.

      Or if you really want to do the work yourself, go to a body shop to get an estimate as high as possible, get DAS to send you a check for that price, then do the repair yourself and pocket the difference.

    You should have your insurance carrier send an adjuster to view and estimate the damage under your comprehensive policy. They will subrogate the claim to the transportation company's carrier. Do this now so they don't claim that it happened on your watch. Your friend might be kind enough to drive the car to a reputable body shop for repair before you return.

    The hood is easy, it just bolts on with 4 bolts. The fender is a bit more work;

    remove the wheel well liner (4 bolts)
    remove the headlight
    unbolt the fender

    you'll now realize there's a spotweld holding it on at the front (under the headlight, which is why you had to remove same) - drill out spotweld.

    bolt new fender on, and replace the spotweld either with a rivet (which, judging from cars I've parted out is exactly what Volvo dealers and professional body shops do) or a bolt and nut.

    Replace headlight and wheel well liner.

    About half an hour to an hour I'd guess, excluding prep time and spraying.
    If you like the car, get a decent spray job that properly matches the color (and in case of metallic, the direction) of the original job, not the $50 special.

    Bram
