All the posts talk about checking for gas with the vacumn tube on the FPR. When I pull the vacumn line off mine I can smell gas but there is no visible liquid? Is this acceptable?

That is normal. The warning sign would be liquid. You'll always be able to smell fuel in the vacuum hose, though.
