Rear trailing bushing removal with grinder? 200

Can a handheld grinder be used to cut the old bushing out? I am wondering about cutting the bushing just inside the brackets and then using a hacksaw blade on a sawzall to remove the remaining rings. Has anyone tried something like this?

I have constructed the "tool" as per the webpage instructions. It was simple and cheap, and it made the job a snap. Why would you want to spend more time and effort removing the old bushing than it would take to make the tool...besides, you can also use the tool to install the new bushing..

and as far as heating the bracket and cooling the bushing..how much is hard compressed rubber going to contract by cooling?

The first time I removed one I used a reciprocating saw with a metal blade, sawing a slot through the bushing from its inside. This will work if the center metal tube is already out, and the rubber won't bother the saw. Just don't do what I did the first time and saw through the parking brake cable. For installation of the replacement bushing I made up a rig quite similar to the ones described on this forum. The rig definitely works better for installation of a clean bushing.

I used one of those Pneumatic muffler chisels. That saved a lot of time in the removal of the old one. Grinding might work cut some of metal material out of the way, you can squeeze it do reduce it's diameter. No promises

You do still have to get the new one in.

The rubber will gum up your grinder and fight you all the way.

Also, you will still be left with the problem of installing the new one. You may be able to press it in by hand if you polish the rings and if you can get a good temperature differential between the bushing (cold) and the support rings (hot).

I suspect that in the time it would take you to grind and cut the old bushing, you can make a bushing press tool from iron plumbing fixtures.
