Starter noise 700 1989

My starter is making a brief screech after the engine starts and the key has been disengaged. It only does this when the temperature and engine are cold. I assume this is the clutch in the starter pinion drive not disengaging properly.

Does this mean my starter is heading south and will need to be replaced soon? If so, is it advisable to just replace the drive in the starter or best to replace the complete starter.

Any one know a good source for the starter drive component?

Before condemning the starter make sure your ignition switch is not the culprit. It could be sticking internally. I had this happen. A test would be to start the car under the hood with a jumper from 12V to the small upper starter terminal to see if the same thing still happens. If it does then it is the starter.

There may even be a specific wire on an unused plug under the hood for this purpose.

    Good luck

You can usually find Volvo starters used, pretty cheap. They don't fail very often and it's the same part on all B23/230/230FT cars. A bit of a bastard to get it out but a long, long extension from the transmission side helps.
    Good luck!

If you feel confident enough to dismantle the starter, give it a good internal clean out, the lubricate the pinion gear and shaft with a bit of grease. It may be that your beariings are starting to fail, or even the brushes. All parts for the motor can be picked up at a good auto electrical supplier.
If you are not competant enough to dismantle, take it to a reconditioning specialist. If you pick up another one used, keep the current one handy for possible future use.
