ECC Malfunction? 900 1995

During the last week my 1995 960 has devloped a problem which I believe is centered in the ECC system. When set on auto the windows fog up and the cabin fills with the smell of coolent. I have not found a coolent leak yet but I have had to top up the fluid level twice. Any ideas as the cause?

I think the problem might be the heater core not the ECC. You might check the heater hoses under the hood where they enter the fire wall. See that the clamps are tight enough. If that checks out then I would focus on the core.

You are right. I have water in the floor which seems to indicate the heater core is bad. I called around to a couple of shops. Ouch! A local repair shop wants $965.00 and a nearby dealer $1565.00. I have also found a new core for $135.00. Is this a repair that a somewhat mechanically inclined person with a shop manual can do? I have read the steps involved and it looks pretty intimidating. Any advice?

I replaced a vacuum valve inside my dash before I found this web site. I spent about 15-20 hours making that repair, it involved tearing the dash out, all the way down to just bundles of wires. It was a job I say now, I never want to do again. But the reality of paying a dealer or mechanic about 1000.00 bucks in labor would make me reconsider. Besides, putting it back together correctly is paramount to me, and may not be to someone else.

In answer to your question, yes it can be done, just go slow, don't force anything, and be organized. Yours is a 95 so maybe you only have to remove the center console to get to the core, one can only hope. Someone here on the site may have better suggestions.
