Rough idle at stop lights 700 1989

Hello,

I have a 89 760 Turbo which idles around 6000 rpm. A recent problem has been occuring when stopped at lights. The idle somtimes drops about 1000 rpm to 5000rpm and the car shudders/vibrates for a second, yet keeps running. Anyone know what this is or how to fix.

Thanks so much,

Jake

Is the rough idle directly related to keeping your foot on the brake? If so, could be the vacuum check valve on the line that runs from the brake booster to the intake.

Here's an old thread on this very problem. I had this happen once, replaced the check valve 2 months ago, and it hasn't happened again. The piece was about $9 from FCP.

I'm assuming you mean 600 not 6000.... you wouldn't be able to drive a car that wants to go 6000 rpm all the time.
Look at the condition of the big black air induction hoses to the intercooler and the intake.
Clean the throttle body out- it's probably filthy.
Make sure plugs, cap and rotor are good.
Check for vacuum leaks at intake manifold and fuel injector seals.
Try adjusting the idle speed up! I think it should be closer to 750. But check all the other items first.

Do you actually mean normally idles at 600 RPM and now idles between 100 and 500 rpm (6000 is extremely high for idle speed)? If that is the case I would check out the FAQ for some potential causes and solutions to your problem. See the FAQ under the features pull down menu.
