Symptoms of a bad compressor bearing/clutch??? 700 1987

I am trying to determine what is causing the awful metallic rattling noise from the drivers side front of my 1987 745 turbo. I am guessing that it is the compressor clutch or bearing but have no experience with this particular area of the car, so I was looking for some input as to what sounds and symptoms a failing clutch or bearing makes.

Thanks guys,
Ian

PS Jason...if you see this, keep meaning to email you but have been having problems w/home computer which is where your last email resides. Talk with you soon.

This is a general answer, since I am a 240 guy. The compressor clutch bearing acts as a bearing only when the a/c is NOT engaged, otherwisw it the pulley and innards spin togather. Do you have the noise when the compressor is running?

In my experience there has been a noise when the a/c drive belt was too loose. It occurred only when the a/c was engaged and was the sound of the clutch being caused to slip when the belt's flapping took up and gave up slack.

Good Luck,

Bob

Bob,

Sounds like it is the clutch bearing...noise goes away when a/ engaged.

Thanks for the information!

Ian
