'Harvesting' an '86 245 200 1986

I have an '86 245 with 230k kilometers that is getting rustier with the winter and starting to have a variety of quirky probs. so I'm looking for a newer wagon (seem to be focusing on 95-96 850's right now)for a more predictable replacement. My '86 would have to be sold "as-is" due to fail on eTest, and it would require a few hundred $ to safety I think. If I can only get maybe C$1000 or so to sell it privately as is, would it be a better option to "harvest" some of the good parts and try to sell them on their own (locally, or eBay maybe?), and then send the rest to the wrecker? I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has done this, re. what parts are most desireable, and what are reasonable to get at for a person with basic shop tools, and basic knowledge. I could box up parts and hold on to them for a while. It has lots of good interior parts, and engine is basically strong. Thanks for ideas.

SM

Not to mention that wiring harness, if it has been upgraded (this isn't the classifieds board, but "I know someone who could be interested" if you can send one from a B230F engine, intact, in the next two months)

Two years ago we bought a rusted out 85 244 for $400--used the left front clip to repair son's 240 diesel wagon, put the CD player in Mom's 240 v8, sold trunk lid and rear window to friend (tree limb fell on his), sold engine and trans to local volvo tech, sold battery, radiator, rear bumper, lights, wheels and tires, seats, etc. Even gave stuff away to some of the local high school kids (relays, etc.).

I think we made about 400+ on the deal. Probably could have made more but we were going for quick and cheap . . . and local (no shipping).

Like Corky said, you'll be amazed at what sells off these cars.

    Good luck,

    Steve A-

I just parted out my daughters crashed '83 gl sedan and found that taillights, turn signals, center consoles, glove box locks, power window switches, little center clock if you have it, ECU and ignition control module, sway bars if they are turbo or IPD, door handles, complete lock sets with keys, sunroof handle and gearbox, bumper trim (hockey sticks), transmission od relay and solenoid, and basically anything you can take off and ship will sell on ebay. People are always looking for some obscure part that you think wouldn't sell.

    Good luck
