Mysterious leak 200

The carpet on the rear passenger floor is continually damp now and has the slight smell of coolant, alkthough my coolant is orange and there is no orange stain. I know that the a/c drainage can make a leak on the front passenger side carpet but this is the middle of winter and the a/c hasn't been on since october. Does anyone have any idea of what the source of this mysterious leak might be? It's been happenning for over a month.

Umm, you wouldn't by any chance have a dog, would you? (Just kidding. Remembered a post about a mysterious coolant leak a few weeks back.)

Heater control valve or core. Pull the left side console panel and have a look at the valve. Bet you'll see coolant residue on the valve. Or, as in the case of my sons car, 1 of the hoses to the valve or the firewall pass through fittings. And yes, coolant/water will migrate to the floor in the back seat. If left unrepaired, the floor board will rust out.

The water valve on the heater is just inside the left side kick panel of the central control panel. Have a look in there for a leak.

Leaks of that type, a/c, water valve, and some others, allow water flow into the padding under the carpet. The padding may have a scrim on its top which prevents water from evaporating upward into the carpet and thus out. They also
flow in the padding all the way from the front into the rear passenger footwells.

If you find a leak, you will want to remove all the carpets and padding and dry them out. This means removal of the two front seats, not the rears. It's a cumbersome but not difficult job. The car can be driven with the carpet and padding out. Put something down in place of carpet to protect the exposed painted metal surfaces.

Good Luck,

Bob
