rack and struts 700 1989

Hi all
I am looking at buying another 89 740 wagon. The old 89 740ti was crunched in an accident last month. The current prospect has a couple of problems. The owner says the steering rack needs the seals replaced and the car needs new front struts. What I need is some idea of the cost to replace the seals the struts. I searched the archive and found that it takes special tools to replace the seals. Is this true? What is the chance of rack/pump damage if it had a long occuring leak? I want to get some idea of the cost /time involved before I check the vehicle out this afternoon. The car is an 89 740 gl wagon with 200,000 miles.
Thanks all
Brad

You really want to consider CHANGING the rack with a rebuilt unit...about $225, though you 'might' prolong the life of the current unit by installing some 'Lucas Steering Glue', available at most parts stores. Struts and installation will run you another $200-$400, depending on where you go/what you buy...Most people find Bilsteins the best. If not familiar, you should have struts professionally done...you don't want a compressed strut hitting your face!
    Good Luck...Dee Jay

I've replaced a rack instead of the seal on the inner tie rods with one from fcpgroton.com. With core returned I think it was about $199.00 and was not all that hard. Need an alignment after it.

I've replaced struts also and they were not that bad if you're fairly able.

    good luck,
    jc
