Cruise loses speed 700 1985

Hello,

My '85 740 Ti loses speed if I set it to cruise control. It's strange; I can feel the car take control of the pedal, and it slows down much more quickly if I tap the brakes or switch the CC off, so it's working. It just won't maintain speed.

Any suggestions?

I've also got a goofy problem with my blinkers. Sometimes ("sometimes" meaning this has happened maybe three times since I've owned the car), I'll switch on a blinker and it won't blink. The bulb just stays illuminated. And this problem disappears after a random amount of time. What the heck?

Alrighty, thanks.

Volfro

PS: There's a beat up blue P1800 in the movie "About A Boy" with Hugh Grant! Saw that tonight. There's also a sexy red one in the videogame "The Bouncer" for PS2. Quite a hot little car, that one is.

I had a siimilar problem with my 240 it was a vacuum hose that was split at the T connector. I agree with the others check all the hoses first to see if it is your problem. If it is that is a cheap and easy fix.

Check the condition of the vacuum hoses. They should be snug. I had a split hose on the pump end. Trimmed the end of the hose and reattached it. Now works fine.

That's one of those year models with bad wiring harness. Check all your grounds, Behind headlights on the fenders.

If this were the older Dana system used in the 240s, I'd say to check the gain setting on the CC ecu. The symptom sounds like too little gain. Too much gain creates an oscillating, cycling, hunting or overshoot (positive feedback in a control system).

Regarding the flashers, try resoldering the flasher relay. Resolder your OD and fuel pump relays, too. $0, 15 minutes each, no risk, clean 'n easy work. If it solves nothing, you're out nothing.

Suggestion: check the system for vacuum leaks before delving into more complicated diagnostics. Vacuum line runs from the servo to a t-piece, one leg goes to the pump (on the strut tower) and the other to the pedal switch(es). For an automatic that's one switch, for a manual 2 and another T-piece. Plenty of opportunity for something to start leaking or crack.

For the indicators, I'd say the relay sometimes fails to operate correctly. Grab another one from the pick'n'pull to try.

Bram
