Turn signal pegs tachometer 200

The turn signals in my wife's '83 245 stopped working. When I try to signal there is a buzzing sound from somewhere behind the dash. Ok, is probably a bad relay and I should track it down and replace it, but...

1) While the buzzing is coming from the center of the dash, the tachometer zooms to some high rpm. It acts like it is on the way to being pegged, but I have been turning off the signal promptly to avoid damaging the tach.

2) The alternator lamp is partially lit at all times. It just glows dimly.

I can't swear that #2 is new, but I think it must be.

Can a bad turn signal relay feed voltage to other parts of the instrument panel, or it there some short circuit in the panel preventing the relay from operating normally?

Thanks,
Flint

I had a problem just like this in my '83 245, every time I used the turn signal all my dash lights would light up and the buzing started. Turned out to be just corrosion in the fuse box. All it takes to clear it up - pull all the fuses and rub all the contacts with some sandpaper to clean them up. Do the ends of the fuses too (unless you put all new fuses in, which isn't a bad idea). This is a pretty common problem, luckily with an easy fix. IPD even sells a brass brush to clean the contacts with, and some grease to smear on the fuses to prevent corrosion.

Let me know if that works.

Check the back of the cluster to see if you have a loose ground wire. A loose ground wire can cause lots of freaky things to happen.

There could be a number of factors causeing the problem, but the alternator light comming on is indicative of low charging levels from the alternator - have you noticed any reduction in crankability? As for a bad relay cause voltage to divert, I really can't emagine how that would happen - but I'm no electrical engineer! I'd replace the relay just to eliminate it as a factor.
